FROM STANDARD TO SUCCESS: BACKWARD DESIGN FOR CAMBRIDGE

Highfield Secondary School Hosted Teacher Workshop on Instructional Design

Jakarta, September 27, 2025 – Highfield Secondary School recently organized a professional development workshop designed to strengthen teachers’ ability to align classroom activities and formative assessments with Cambridge exam standards through the backward design method. The event brought together educators from multiple Highfield centers, including Bekasi, Duren Sawit, Cirebon, and Bogor, highlighting the school’s commitment to consistent teaching quality and preparing students for excellence in IGCSE and A Level examinations.

The program featured three main sessions. The first was a focus group discussion, where teachers collaborated on case problems to connect classroom activities with the expected outcomes outlined in the Cambridge syllabus. This interactive exchange encouraged participants to share strategies and reflect on current practices. The second session delivered in-depth material on decoding Cambridge assessment objectives and applying backward design through the SOLO Taxonomy in lesson planning. Lastly, the third session let teachers explore how to identify learning goals, set clear achievement standards, and design purposeful classroom activities that directly prepare students for examinations.

“By practicing backward design, our teachers are better equipped to plan with purpose, ensuring each lesson leads to a meaningful student learning,” said Elisabet Susan, M.Pd, a curriculum and instructional specialist who led the workshop. Through this initiative, Highfield Secondary School reaffirmed its dedication to continuous teacher development and international education standards, ensuring that every student receives high-quality instruction and the best preparation for academic success.
